My name is Julie Whalen. I am a freshman secondary english education major. I have two older sisters and one older brother who go to UC as well. I am from Harrison, Ohio, which is about 25 minutes west of Cincinnati. I went to Harrison High School and work as a cashier at Kroger.
I love to read and write, so choosing a career that involves both was a big factor in my decision to become a teacher. Everyone thinks I'm crazy for wanting to teach high school English, but I'm okay with that because I know I can do it.
ISTE Reflection:
Standard 1 - Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity.
Inspiring students to learn and be creative is the most important aspect of being a teacher. We are there to help those young minds advance themselves in their thinking and develop who they want to be as a person. By giving the students the tools and motivation they need we can help shape the future not only of our students, but of our country. It is important to make the students reflect on their work and discuss it with their fellow students. By making students talk about their ideas and word them aloud, it helps them to organize what they think into clear, reasoned thoughts. It also allows the other students to explore and add to those ideas and make them even better. In this way we can continue to push education forward and keep our students thinking and developing new ways of seeing the world and everything in it.
I have noticed this standard being applied in this class through the lesson plan project we have been assigned. It has been reiterated multiple times that we have free reign with this project and should find something as fun and creative as possible, along with being interactive with the class. Also, since this is a group project, it ties into the standard because we are being forced to share our ideas witho our group. As I said before, through this we can expand our ideas and make our project even better.
Standard 2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments
design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity
This standard is very important because technology is becoming such a big part of culture today. Iphones, computers, and cell phones are a major part of kids' everyday lives. Instead of fighting this wave of technology, teachers should embrace it as a new and interesting way to get the kids into their lessons. Also, incorporating computers or other technology into classrooms allows kids to find information faster and with greater success. It will also keep the kids interested in the lesson and allow them to become more independent, as with this technology they can do research themselves.
We have applied this standard in class every week. We are always using the computers and smartboard and talking about different ways to use technology. In our lesson plans it is a requirement to incorporate technology, so it's easy to say that this standard has been applied in class.
Standard 4 - Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility · advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources This standard is very important because of the problem plagiarism is causing in classrooms today. Teachers are constantly trying to teach kids the importance of being honest with themselves and their work, and new ways to detect plagiarism are popping up all over the place. To avoid this, teachers can show kids how to properly cite their sources and use websites such as SafeAssign to check their students’ work for plagiarism. We have incorporated this standard in class because we discussed the ramifications of plagiarizing and talked about different websites to check our students’ work for copying. We also discussed different techniques to make sure students stayed focused while they were on the computers.
